"When I first found out I was pregnant I knew I wanted my aunt to be involved in the birth of my baby. I had no idea that this sweet baby would change the course of both of our lives in such a dynamic way. As an aunt she was always checking in on me throughout the pregnancy and researching ways she could help me through the pregnancy as well as the birth. Through her research she became inspired by the role of doula in the birthing process. When she told me that she had decided to become a certified doula I was ecstatic. How awesome to have not only my aunt, but also my aunt with doula training! From the beginning she was very interested in what my expectations were going to be for the birth. She wanted to know what I expected from her, what I would need for support, and what methods I prefer to decrease stress and promote relaxation. Her goal was to be there for my needs and she went above and beyond to meet those needs once she got the call that I was being induced. She came to the hospital fully prepared with massaging tools, oils, and support devices. Throughout my long labor process Deb was there by my side providing comfort and support. She was familiar and educated in the different positions that would assist in the labor and encouraged me to change positions frequently to increase progress. She provided focus through breathing and relaxation techniques during contractions. She advocated for me to the nurses, making sure that all my needs were met. She massaged my swollen legs and aching back and used techniques to support my body during challenging moments. Throughout it all she remained a calm and focused force that provided support to not only me, but my family as well. When my body would not allow my baby to drop and we all came to the realization that I would have to have a C-section, Deb was there to acknowledge my hard work and let me know that I did everything I could. In those moments I realized that my aunt had found her calling; to play a dynamic role as a doula, empowering and supporting women throughout the miracle of birth. Our lives were forever changed through this journey and I can’t wait to see her help others through the amazing journey of childbirth."
"Having a doula present is far more valuable to the birth experience than having family or friends present. A doula's knowledge of the process and familiarity is far superior than the limited experience of a relative or friend. Our doula provided moral support and information when questions arose, and assistance with comfort tasks like keeping fluids available and relief of discomfort by massaging and using other techniques. Our doula was always there and ready for anything we needed her for. I felt comfortable leaving when I needed to get away for a short period. I had to leave twice so I could get food and go home to let my dogs out. These two excursions were refreshing as I do not particularly like hospitals and the fresh air while out allowed my mind to recuperate. This allowed me to fully support my wife through the final hours of her birthing time."
"Deb was my doula during the birth of our baby boy! She provided support not only to me, but my family as well. She was able to assist in the painful times and celebrate with us in the joyful times. She was supportive and a great person to have during such a momentous time in my life."
